After releasing the iconic Volkswagen Camper Van 10220 set, LEGO has set it’s sight on another iconic car.
It’s none other than the classic Mini Cooper in British Racing Green complete with a white roof and stripes down the bonnet.
This set is due for release in August 2014 and will definitely be a popular set.
Mini’s are small cars but this set is made of 1077 bricks. It’s only slightly less than the 1332 pieces that complete the VW Camper Van 10220. The price is correspondingly lower at $99.99 vs $119.99.
The roof lifts off like the VW Camper Van to reveal the interior. The doors, bonnet and boot can be opened and it even comes with a picnic mat and basket as accessories.
Below are a few video clips by the Designer of the set and also advertisements by LEGO for this set.
Completed build of the Mini Cooper measures about 4 inches (11cm) high, 9 inches (25cm) long and 5 inches (14cm) wide. The VW Camper measures 5.5 inches (14cm) high and 11.8 inches (30cm) long.
At this moment I can only assume the scale of the Mini Cooper 10242 and the VW Camper Van 10220 are about the same. Will update once I get my hands on the set and build it. The approximate scale of the VW Camper 10220 is 1:17.
Other 1:17 scale cars released by LEGO in the past are:
– Ferrari FXX 8156
– Ferrari Enzo 8652
– Ferrari F430 Challenge 8143
– Ferrari 430 Spider 8671
– Lamborghini Polizia 8214
– Lamborghini Gallardo LP 560-4 8169
There are no minifigures in this set as the build is bigger than minifigure scale. A Technic or Belville figure is about the right scale for 1:17 scale vehicles.
Given the popularity of the Mini, this set will be a hot seller and snapped up quickly. For those who have not purchased the VW Camper Van 10220, better make it soon as it is likely that it will be discontinued after the release of the Mini Cooper 10242.
