Many fans of Star Wars like stormtrooper minifigures and also the two iconic droids, R2-D2 and C3-PO.

LEGO has released newer sets with clone trooper minifigures but the original stormtroopers are still the most recognizable and iconic design.

In the past, one of the best sets to get these few minifigures was the Luke’s Landspeeder 8092 set but it’s been discontinued last year. The set that replaces this is the Droid Escape 9490.

It comes at a lower price point of $20 vs $25. In reducing the price, the piece count has gone down slightly and comes with one less minifigure.

Minifigures

Droid Escape 9490 Luke’s Landspeeder 8092
C-3PO (Wires on Torso) C-3PO (Dark Gold)
R2-D2 R2-D2
Sandtrooper (White Pauldron) Sandtrooper (Black Pauldron)
Sandtrooper (Orange Pauldron) Sentry Droid (If you consider it a minifig)
Luke Skywalker
Obi-Wan Kenobi

C-3PO has a revised torso print showing some wires while R2-D2 remains the same.

The sandtroopers have a revised printing on the torso, some sand on the helmet and even the legs are printed.

The Landspeeder comes with what LEGO considered a minifigure, the sentry droid. It is made of some LEGO bricks and not a traditional minifigure. So essentially it only has one additional minifigure over the Droid escape.

The main build is the escape pod which is made using big pieces of specially molded parts which to me was a little disappointing. It limits the use of what you could do with the parts for other creations or even to customize the original set.

Luke’s Landspeeder 8092 is a better set but if you could find a set at close to retail price would be a good deal.

Otherwise, the Droid Escape 9490 would be a good alternative. Lower price and less minifigures, a trade for Luke Skywalker and Obi-Wan Kenobi for an extra Sandtrooper, makes it worth to get this as a starter set.
